Makabelo Malumane is the Managing Director, Head of Transaction Banking for the East Africa business at Standard Chartered Bank. She is currently responsible for the development and monetisation of award-winning Cash Management and Trade Finance capabilities for large organisations. With new technologies disrupting the status quo, Makabelo is passionate about providing innovative and customised solutions for businesses with a growth focus within the African continent. She is a firm believer in unlocking high-reward opportunities through strategic partnerships with other key industry players like Fintechs, technology firms and regulators.
Makabelo’s career experience spans over 19 years working in market-leading organisations in the technology and financial services sectors in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Her success is underpinned by her versatile blend of skills across sales, client management, product development and information technology which have brought in a fresh perspective to the various leadership and management roles that she has held. Her ability to lead teams that can deliver differentiated client value propositions that leverage on technology has resulted in the bank winning a number of key industry awards over the last few years.
She is the co-lead of the Global Transaction Banking Diversity and Inclusion Gender Committee and has been instrumental in developing and leading various initiatives to attract, develop, engage, and retain talent across the bank. She is also a Culture Champion leading the Future Ready Workforce initiative that is mandated to enhance strategic direction and clarity at all levels within the Corporate Banking business globally. She is passionate about developing the next set of young leaders and harnessing their new ways of thinking to influence organisational change and growth. She is a volunteer in the Women in Tech programme at Standard Chartered Bank and is involved in other initiatives focused on growing and upskilling women to excel within their communities.
Makabelo holds a degree in Information Technology with majors in Scientific Computing and Psychology from the University of Cape Town and a postgraduate qualification in Management (Business Administration) from the University of Witwatersrand Business School. She has also completed the Board Competency Programme through the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) that focuses on corporate governance effectiveness in boards.
