Mr. Kuria Waithaka is an experienced corporate and commercial law and governance expert and corporate affairs practitioner with a proven record of leadership in thought and knowledge management, analysis and practical effective handling of legal, regulatory, communication, compliance, company secretarial, sustainability, risk management and corporate governance matters.
Mr. Waithaka is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, a Certified Secretary, a Certified Investment and Financial Analyst, an Associate member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a Governance Auditor, a member of the Institute of Directors, Kenya and a Kenya certified retirement benefits scheme trustee.

Kuria, whose career spans over 26 years, has extensive professional experience, obtained in senior roles in both the private and public sectors, in diverse industries, including Kenya Airways, Citibank N.A., Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, the Privatization Commission, Kenya and East African Breweries Plc. He is currently the Company Secretary & Chief Legal Officer at the Nairobi Securities Exchange Plc, where he has overseen the Exchange’s company secretarial, legal, compliance and corporate/external affairs functions including sustainability for over 8 years. He has also had the opportunity to be the Head of Secretariat for the African Securities Exchanges Association (ASEA).

A Chevening Scholar, Kuria holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Nairobi as well as a Master’s degree in law (LLM) in Corporate and Commercial law from the University College London (UCL), University of London. He has also undertaken aviation law studies at post-graduate level. In addition, he has various corporate governance and risk management certificates.
He has been a key speaker at various professional events including Law Society of Kenya Seminars,
regional In-house counsel trainings, Africa Aviation Law Conferences and capital markets seminars and also a panellist at various forums on Sustainability/Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) matters, Leadership and Entrepreneurship. He is passionate about gender diversity and mainstreaming and also economic empowerment in society.

He is also engaged in several professional and community service initiatives including being a member of the Registration Committee of the Institute of Certified Investment & Financial Analysts; a member of the Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee of St. Johns Ambulance Kenya; a Nature Kenya Board Member; an immediate past member of the National Civil Aviation Administrative Review Tribunal and Past Kenya Country Chair for Rotary District 9212 (in which District he has held other senior leadership roles). He is a Member of the Kenya Government established Task Force to review the Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya Act (now proposed to be renamed the Governance Secretaries Act). He also sits on some private company Boards as a director.
